about

In memory of David Loucks, who hears us even now.

a cap*pel*la also a*ca*pel*la adv or adj [It. "in the manner of the chapel']: Sung without accompaniment.

Of all the marvelous instruments we have wit to invent, none compare to the Maker's best instrument: the human voice. In all of scripture, God does not sing. That is our job and our joy; to give praise to God through the gift of song.

Vox humana is the prime instrument of our church ensembles; the only instrument of our assembly. How often at conventions have we promised to love the sound of a singing assembly above all other sounds? Yet how often do we make that sound compete with others? While the organ, piano, guitar, et al,. when used correctly should support and help lead the assembly's voice, we quickly forget what the voice sounds like by itself when we have many instruments at our command. Parishes without these instruments are more often pitied than praised.

It need not be so. It may take a bit more time, courage, and leadership to help an assembly sing a cappella, but the rewards are worth it. We have had the pleasure of hearing an assembly of 300 sing our "Holy Family Kyrie" as a 4-part canon with only an organ pedal droning a low D. Last Good Friday, everyone sang an entire liturgy, 10 pieces, completely a cappella. It can be done!

This album contains 14 songs, psalms, and acclamations which we designed to be used a cappella. You'll hear rhythm instruments on many of them. We recorded in some places with pitched instruments as an example of how the song might first be taught. But there is no right way or right style: use them however your people will be best served.

Sing aloud to God our strength: shout for joy to God! ~ Laura and David
