As I began my sabbatical in 2020 with the hope of writing songs for this beloved collection, I sat on a beach on the Oregon Coast wondering how to start. I opened a book called “Blessed Among All Women” by Robert Ellsberg, and the page fell open to an essay on Etty Hillesum, a young Jewish woman growing up in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation. Right away tears welled up in me, as I read this quote:

“I know that a new and kinder day will come. I would so much like to live on, if only to express all the love I carry within me. And there is only one way of preparing the new age, by living it even now in our hearts.”

I then knew how to start my project. To me, it was astounding to think that even amidst the horror of her life, she could still dwell deep within her heart and express great hope. She died in Auschwitz in 1943. Etty, thank you for inspiring me. We remember you!
