about
This song is dedicated to my friend Deacon Dennis Kelly. He was our pastoral leader at St. Patrick Church for 3 years. In 2019 he gave a homily on Deacon Katharine Maurer of the Methodist Church, and I was so inspired by her I had to learn more. It was eye opening to learn that other denominations have women deacons, and hope that the Catholic Church can learn from them.
Known as the Angel of Angel Island (in the San Francisco Harbor), she was the smiling face of welcome for 40 years, starting in 1912, to the thousands of immigrants coming to America and detained on Angel Island, sometimes for years. In my reading about her, it was clear that she loved people without question, no matter their country of origin or their religious background. She is quoted as saying, “If you look at them through the eyes of God, you will see real worth”. I learned a lot from a wonderful article online: “immigrant-voices.aiisf.org” by public historian Maria Sakovich. As I wrote this song, I kept wondering what Deacon Katharine would say today about the treatment of immigrants at our borders. I imagine she might say the following:
lyrics
REFRAIN
Looking through the eyes of God,
you will see great worth;
Looking through the eyes of love,
you may heal a broken heart.
Kamino megumi de,
kono yoh wo minuku;
Ai no megumi de,
kokoro wo iyasu.
Verse 1
Be a sanctuary for the lost,
those who seek, those in sorrow;
Listen to their stories and their pain,
you will know the face of God.
Verse 2
In the midst of sorrow be a light in the dark,
in the suffering;
welcome all who seek a better home,
you will make a home for God.
Bridge
And with all your heart be joyful,
you will show the love of God.
