about

St. Hildegard of Bingen, 1098-1179, a German Benedictine Abbess, was a composer, herbalist, writer, visionary and mystic. Much of her music came to her in visions, and we are blessed today because much of it was written down, including this chant. This hymn to the Virgin Mary is actually quite long, so only the first stanza is represented here, done in echo form for ease of response.

O Greenest Branch, Hail!
Who came forth in blowing wind
From the Holy Ones.
