about
St. Brigid of Kildare, 451-525, was an abbess who founded the convent of Kildare in Ireland. There are not many facts written down about her, and often what one finds is blended with the folklore of the Celtic goddess Brigid. At first, I was diligently trying to understand the difference, but then realized that I was OK living with the mystery.
St. Brigid’s feast day, February 1, is also the beginning of the Celtic season of Imbolc, which symbolizes the coming of the light, halfway between the winter solstice and spring equinox. Brigid is also the patron saint of welcome, feast and healing. The images of this song are drawn from poetry about Brigid in the Carmina Gadelica.
lyrics
Refrain
Darkness to light,
night into day.
Wellspring of wisdom,
show me the way.
Verse 1
You're the way of compassion,
the doorway of welcome,
The pathway of mercy and joy;
Though I walk into darkness,
may you bring me to daylight.
Show me the way.
Refrain
Verse 2
You are the river of justice,
abundance and plenty,
the cup full of wisdom and peace.
When my vessel is empty,
let your spring rise within me.
Show me the way.
Refrain
Verse 3
You are the garden of virtues,
the mansion of gladness,
the sun and the moon in the sky.
When I wander away from
the family of heaven,
Show me the way.
