about
This song was originally written for the musical “Grace on the Margins”, produced by the Intercommunity Peace and Justice Center of Seattle, and was debuted at the Northwest Women’s Convocation in 2013. IPJC was very inspired by Cat Willett’s story.
In Chicago on September 24, 2009, a young man named Derrion Albert was killed in brutal street violence by other youth. Cat was profoundly affected by this event, asking, “Why do youth kill youth?” This led her to join an intentional community called Open Hands. This community’s focus was to work together on issues of youth and gun violence, and to ask the questions: What does love require? What can we do together that we cannot do alone? How do we address the root causes of this violence? These questions that Cat poses are important for all of us as we face the many forms of violence in ourselves and our world.
lyrics
Refrain
What does love require?
What can we do together
that we cannot do alone?
Come and take my hand
Come and walk with me,
the union of our hearts
will make us strong.
Verse 1
Too many people live in the grip of fear.
Too many broken lives are lost along the way.
Only with hearts open can we begin to feel
the call of love for a new day.
Verse 2
Violence and anger and hurt,
how do these live within us.
But the wisdom, the vision, the hope,
they are stronger still.
